The Tea Cabin on Weymouth Esplanade is a well established feature of Weymouth seafront, having originally opened in 1870. The cabin itself contains the kitchen and serving areas, with all tables, of which there are about a dozen, outside. However, most of the tables are under cover, allowing service during a typical rainy summer.
The Tea Cabin offers a range of hot and cold snacks, as well as ice creams, flapjacks, fruit scones, plain scones and cakes. The cakes, scones and flapjacks are ‘All baked on the premises’ according to the blackboard outside. The scones were huge, and two cakes were on offer when I visited: Dorset apple cake with Dorset clotted cream, and coffee and walnut cake. The menu is displayed above the counter, in the manner customary in takeaways.
A bacon sandwich, a piece of coffee and walnut cake, and a mug of Yorkshire tea came to £8.90. The bacon sandwich was just that with nothing extra, and for the price that’s to be expected. The tea was brewed and poured into the mug in less than a quarter of a minute whilst I was served at the counter. The member of staff who served me asked if it was too strong but actually, despite the brevity of the infusion, it was just right.
