Tiffins Tea Rooms is situated mid-way along the High Street of the small, picturesque town of Petworth. It has nine tables in a single room for those wishing to take tea. The menu offers breakfasts until midday, hot and cold lunches and, of course, a selection of cakes. Six cakes as well as scones were on display at the counter, with teacakes also included on the menu. The beverages on offer are displayed on blackboards covering the whole of one wall of the tea room, and include a dozen teas, coffees, tisanes, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. The tea room is open daily, except for Mondays, until 4 pm, and also open on Friday evenings.
A tuna mayonnaise and cucumber sandwich, a slice of chocolate and caramel loaf, and a cup of matcha tea came to £12.95. The chocolate and caramel loaf was a little dry around the edges but otherwise enjoyable. The matcha tea was a new experience for me: green tea covered with a deep froth of steamed milk. It may well have been a good example of the style and may well appeal to those progressing to tea from latte coffee, but isn’t a style I intend to revisit in a hurry.
Service was cheerful and Tiffins was doing a brisk trade for a Sunday afternoon, with all tables occupied by time of leaving.
