Tilly’s Tea and Coffee Shop, Aylesbury

Date visited: Thursday 18th May 2023

Tilly’s is a fairly small tea room in the centre of Aylesbury. It has two rooms for those wishing to take tea, one on each of the ground and first floors. There are six tables on the ground floor for those wishing to take tea, as well as more tables – and a sofa – on the first floor and two tables outside in the street.

The menu offers an all day breakfast, as well as sandwiches, salads, jacket potatoes and, of course, cakes. On the day I visited six cakes were on display at the counter, as well as three different types of scone – savoury, sultana, or cherry – being available. Beverages include a choice of three different teas as well as coffees and soft drinks.

I chose a ploughman’s salad, a slice of coffee and walnut cake, and a pot of English breakfast tea for £8.80. For the price – less than half that of many tea rooms – this was good meal, especially the cake. A nice touch that many venues get wrong was that the butter provided with the salad was sufficiently melted to be spreadable on the bread. The tea clearly suffered from the area having very hard water.

Tilly’s is clearly a popular local venue, with many customers that the staff recognise. By 1.30 pm the tea room was full and having to turn customers away.

Note that this is a very small business and, although usually open from Mondays to Saturdays, may be closed for staff absences or holidays.
