The Cotswold Tearoom is one of two tearooms on the High Street of Moreton-in-Marsh, a small market town on the northern edge of the Cotswolds. It has a single room with seven tables as well as a sofa and easy chair for those taking tea. In addition there are two tables outside on the pavement. On the day I visited, which was a market day, the tea room was very busy when I visited in the late morning, but then custom greatly decreased by lunchtime – in most tearooms it’s the other way round. That custom was a mix of regulars, who the staff knew well, and passing tourists such as myself.
Menus were provided on each table as pages clipped to a small clipboard, with a small range of specials displayed on a blackboard. There were separate breakfast and lunch menus, each filling a page, with the breakfast served until midday and lunch thereafter. Afternoon teas are available from 12.30 pm, but cakes are available at any time, with six cakes on display when I visited. The beverages menu is extensive, with coffees, soft drinks, wines, beers and ciders listed. However, the range of teas was not listed on the menu, with advice to ask the staff about the full range. The selection of teas was reasonable, but regrettably not extensive in comparison with the choice of coffees.
Eggs Benedict with ham, a slice of apple and blackberry cake, and a pot of green tea came to £14.50. The eggs Benedict had plenty of chives in the rather vividly coloured sauce, which was rather strongly flavoured for my preference. The cake was much more to my liking – moist, with a good balance of apple and cinnamon flavours, and with patches of blackberry.
