The Town Hall Tea Rooms in Royal Wootton Bassett takes its name from the eighteenth century town hall nearby and isn’t itself housed in a former town hall. The tea rooms occupy just a small part of the their building, which dates from the sixteenth century, and are quite a small establishment, with two rooms holding between them just six tables for those wishing to take tea. In fine weather this is supplemented by tables outside on the wide pavement.
The menu offered quite an extensive choice for brunch – with fried foods dominating – and a somewhat briefer lunch menu of toasties and jacket potatoes – though brunch remained available. The beverages menu included a small range of bagged teas as well as coffees and soft drinks. Three cakes were on display at the counter, which for such a small venue is quite sufficient.
A cheese and ham toasted sandwich, a slice of chocolate cake, and a pot of green tea came to £11.15. The sandwich was quickly served, with salad, thickly-sliced ham, and a quite generous serving of cheese too. The chocolate cake was of three layers, with plenty of cream. Initially this very sugary; once one had adjusted to the sweetness it was incredibly chocolatey. The green tea, whilst no longer green, was of stronger flavour than often found.
This tea room seemed to be one serving mainly local customers, with visitors from further afield perhaps a slight surprise though politely served. Overall this was a very filling and tasty experience, with prompt service.
At the time of visiting the business was advertised for sale for £55,000 with a stated turnover of £78,000.
