The Blitz Tearoom is on Waterloo Street near the seafront in Weston-super-Mare, which isn’t a street frequented by most day trippers. Despite this, the tea room seems to do a brisk trade, with many tables booked for afternoon tea on the day visited. There are eight tables in a single room for those wishing to take tea, and most of these were occupied during our lunchtime visit. Music from the 1940s plays quietly in the background, and the staff are attired in an approximation of dress from the same period. The room is decorated with memorabilia and photographs from the period, including some of the town at that time.
The food menu has separate sections for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, with the breakfast and lunch menus each having a dozen items. The cake menu is of similar length, and presented on a blackboard. The beverages menu has a diverse, though not extensive, selection of teas, as well as coffees, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. Also on the drinks menu, to fit with the 1940s theme, are Camp coffee, Ovaltine, and Bovril.
A ham and coleslaw doorstep sandwich, a slice of coffee and walnut cake, and a pot of loose leaf jasmine tea came to £13.35. The cake was soft and moist without being sticky, and with plenty of coffee cream. Overall, an excellent and filling experience!
