With just two inside and two outside tables for those wishing to take tea The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is Bath’s smallest tearoom. With its small size and location beside a taxi rank, not surprisingly it caters as much for takeaway customers as for those wishing to stay for tea, and is laid out much like a takeaway, with menus on blackboards behind the counter, a chiller for soft drinks and a freezer for locally made ice cream.
The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party offers a range of light snacks as well as teas and coffees. A small selection of cakes and pastries are displayed at the counter. A chicken mayo sandwich, which included some salad leaves and crisps, a slice of chocolate cake and a pot of Teapigs Everyday tea came to £11.20. The sandwich was unremarkable, but the cake, with two layers of chocolate cream inside and a harder chocolate cream topping, was delicious and substantial. Also of note were the huge teapot and similarly large teacup, with the pot providing three large cupfuls of tea. Following many disappointing experiences elsewhere of Teapigs branded tea – usually little more than coloured water – this was my first where their tea was flavourful.
