The Abbey Tea Rooms, in Church Street is situated immediately opposite the entrance to Tewkesbury Abbey, from which it takes its name. The first impression from outside is of a rather twee tourist trap. Nevertheless, it was a very enjoyable entrapment, taking tea in their tea garden surrounded by bees and flowers and stuff.
Both the long narrow tea room and small tea garden at the back are packed with items from the 1970s and before. The menu is extensive, and service was friendly and quick. There’s a good selection of cakes, except on Mondays where the choice is more limited ahead of the tearoom being closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A ham salad sandwich, a slice of chocolate fudge cake and a pot of green tea came to £13.10.
The customer toilets are outside near the back of the tea garden – this may be a rather bracing experience for those taking tea during the winter months.
