The seafront building occupied by Whelk Coppers has a chequered history. Originally three fisherman’s cottages, it was converted to a holiday home in the 1930s and was used as officers’ billets in World War II. It then became a small private school and later was converted to self-catering holiday apartments. It was then vacant from the mid 1980s until 1992 when part became a tea room, with the remainder again a holiday home. The wrought iron gates were reputedly designed by Walt Disney, a friend of the original owner of the building.
The menu is mainly of local foods, with separate breakfast and lunch menus, the latter mainly of fairly light snacks. The range of teas to drink is not extensive. There are a couple of rooms for those taking tea as well as a small tea garden and also tables out the front of the building for those wishing to enjoy the sea air whilst taking tea.
Kipper pate on sourdough toast with salad, a double chocolate cookie, and a pot of green tea came to only £8.90. This was excellent all round and equal to many a more expensive meal from other tearooms.
