My experience of tearooms in seaside resorts has generally not been that good. Buttercups on Cromer’s High Street is an exception to that experience. That’s not to say it’s a high class establishment, but it served good food at a reasonable price. The menu is quite extensive, with a wide selection of local shellfish offerings – Cromer still has a small crab and lobster fishing industry. There was also a good selection of cakes on display at the counter, though these are for consumption on the premises only – those wishing for a slice of cake to take away will be disappointed. There’s a good range of teas which are served well. Being close to the seafront, Buttercups can get very busy on warmer days when there are many day-trippers in town.
A tuna mayonnaise sandwich, a slice of very rich chocolate and caramel cake (with chunks of caramel as a topping), and a pot of black jasmine tea came to £10. Black jasmine tea is quite an unusual offering, usually it’s green jasmine tea. The tea was accompanied by a saucer on which to place the removable tea infuser once the tea was brewed to perfection – again, not a feature at the average seaside resort tearoom.
