Tea by the Taw is, as its name suggests, on the banks of the River Taw, in Barnstaple. The rather elegant building was originally built in 1922 as the offices and waiting room for town’s bus station.
Tea by the Taw is a traditional tea room. A pot of tea, ham salad sandwich, and half cream tea (a single scone instead of two, but with the full quantity of cream and jam) came to just £11.20, and very filling it was too. On a rather showery summer day, the single tea room was exceedingly busy, with some customers having to wait before they could be seated to take tea. The only disappointment was the rather small pot of tea, with no refills without charge.
