Dartmouth Castle is about a mile south of the centre of Dartmouth. In addition to locals from Warfleet and those visiting the castle, an English Heritage property, Dartmouth Castle Tea Rooms gets trade from passing walkers and cyclists making their way along the South West Coast Path. The castle, along with Kingswear Castle on the opposite bank of the Dart and equally far from its namesake town, guard what was once an important naval estuary.
Those taking tea can do so inside the small tea room, or at tables outside. There are also some covered seats on the hill opposite the tea rooms giving a view over the castle, which were also popular. The tea rooms themselves offer a good view out to sea.
On this rather damp late summer’s day I chose to eat inside. For such a small establishment there is a relatively long menu and a good range of cakes produced by the proprietors. A pot of tea, ploughman’s lunch, and a toffee and apple flapjack for £11.75 were excellent sustenance after a brisk walk from Dartmouth on a dreary day.
